AAAS 251 - Classical JPN Lit & Culture

The course provides an overview of Japanese literature and cultural history from the 7th to the 12th Century. Students will explore early myth-histories, poetic anthologies, setsuwa tales, women’s diaries, The Tale of Genji and the refined court society that inspired it, and glance at the different lifestyles and values of the emerging warrior class. Course materials include literature in translation and works of criticism. Contemporary reception of several works of premodern literature will also be explored. No prerequisites.
