AAAS 355 - Aspects of Multilingualism


Credits: 4

This course is designed to explore the phenomenon of multilingualism from sociolinguistic, linguistic anthropology, and language acquisition perspectives. We will begin by examining the historical, societal, and individual aspects of multilingualism, engaging in discussions on identities, language ideologies, language policies, and educational settings. The course will then address contemporary issues in multilingualism, including those faced in migrant and refugee contexts, the influence of new media and popular music, and the dynamics of linguistic landscapes. Prerequisite: LING 114, LING 118, or recent successful completion of a formal foreign language course at the 204 level or higher.
