AAAS 230 - Contemporary Chinese Cinemas

Around a dozen subtitled films from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan are screened during classroom meetings. Core requirements include writing short (3-6 page) interpretations of 4 films, and two take-home exams. Lectures and readings cover Chinese film history, prominent directors and films, cinematic terminology, and special focus on the relationship between form and content in movies. All lectures, readings, and films are presented in English, knowledge of Chinese language is not required.
