AAAS 255 - Modern Japanese History Credits: 4
Introduction to early modern (16001868) and modern (1868 ) Japanese history. Topics covered include the effect of global trade networks and the age of empires on early modern Japanese history; diplomatic interactions and nationalism; the rapid adoption and deployment of medical and manufacturing technology; and the particular problems caused by Japans unique geographical situation. The course will highlight the impact of government initiatives and war mobilization on the Japanese economy and society. In particular, the course will emphasize the role of ideology and religion in government efforts to shape the population.
