English for Multilinguals

The English Language Institute (ELI) provides courses, tutoring services, and mentoring for international undergraduate, graduate, and multilingual students who might not use English as their primary language at home. Its goal is to help students improve their ability to use English in an academic context so that they may achieve their academic potential. Courses administered by the ELI use the English for Multilinguals (EML) rubric, and these classes are for matriculated students.

Undergraduate international students register for an EML course after taking an English Language Assessment during International Student Orientation. Other multilingual students may opt into EML courses as well. Most undergraduate EML courses offer credit toward graduation.

The ELI also offers practicum experience in TESOL. These courses require an application process and may be cross-listed with other departments.

Graduate students may register for courses and receive between one and four credits that count toward the hours they need to be full-time students. Some graduate courses are cross-listed with undergraduate courses but are given S/U grades.

Questions should be addressed to the ELI
