Biomanufacturing Project Management Advanced Certificate


The Biomanufacturing Project Management Advanced Certificate will document a student’s completion of a formally organized suite of courses integrating biomanufacturing science and professional project management. The program provides a balanced foundation in sustainable bioprocess design, unit operation, regulatory and quality considerations, leadership skills, digital communication, and team innovation strategies for managing complex projects in the bioindustry. Students will complete a cohesive curriculum that combines technical knowledge from bioprocess and manufacturing engineering with skills in planning, coordination, and execution drawn from project management. It integrates two training programs-biomanufacturing engineering and project management into one program. The program offers flexibility through an industry-informed curriculum design, course materials, capstone project, internship, optional hands-on training, and the ability to tailor project topics to individual career goals. The intent of the program is to prepare students for bioindustry jobs and career development. This approach emphasizes the application of project management principles within the unique technical, regulatory, and sustainability contexts of biomanufacturing. Graduates will be well-equipped to pursue leadership roles, such as biomanufacturing project manager, process development manager, operations lead, or program manager in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, sustainable manufacturing, and related sectors.

The Biomanufacturing Project Management Advanced Certificate is designed to:

  • Prepare professionals to lead interdisciplinary teams in biomanufacturing industry environments.
  • Equip students with skills to plan, communicate, execute, and evaluate sustainable bioprocesses from concept through scale-up.

Admissions Requirements


Admission to the Biomanufacturing Project Management, Advanced Certificate program is open to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, management, or a closely related area who have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. All applicants must submit the Binghamton University Graduate School application, including official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, a current résumé or curriculum vitae, and a statement of purpose describing professional goals and the relevance of the certificate to those goals. Non-native English speakers must also provide proof of English language proficiency as required by the Graduate School.

Program Requirements


The Biomanufacturing Project Management Advanced Certificate program requires the successful completion of 16 graduate credits, typically completed over a six-month period. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all certificate coursework to remain in good academic standing and to be eligible for the awarding of the certificate. The curriculum is divided into two primary areas: Biomanufacturing and Project Management, culminating in an industry-informed capstone. All courses are taught at the graduate level and may be applied toward other approved graduate degree programs at Binghamton University, subject to program review and approval.

Biomanufacturing (4 credits)

  • BME 510 - Sustainable Bioprocess Design and Scale-Up (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: BME 500)

Project Management (4 credits)

  • PM 500 - Fundamentals of Project Management (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: None)
  • PM 510 - Leadership Skills in a Digital World (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: PM 500)

Elective Courses (6 credits)


Students must complete one Biomanufacturing elective (2 credits) and two Project Management electives (4 credits):

Project Management Electives (choose two)

  • PM 520 - Management of Strategic Human Capital (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: PM 500, PM 510)
  • PM 530 - Data Science for Project Management (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: PM 500, PM 510)
  • PM 540 - Introduction to Product Management (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: PM 500)
  • PM 550 - Creativity, Process, Innovation, Implementation (2 cr.) (Prerequisite: PM 510)

Capstone Requirement (2 credits)


This course includes an industry-informed team project integrating biomanufacturing and project management concepts.
